Hotel The Place

Hotel The Place

Destination: Mal Pais

In the outskirts of the Mal Pais farming and fishing village, Hotel The Place surprises you with its posh contemporary lounge: gaudy chandeliers, bright red globe lights, yellow leather couches, blue wicker furniture, outlandish artwork on the walls, and a mystical pool.

Lying on the outdoor gazebo and glancing across the turquoise-tint tiled pool at the base of gardens flecked with magenta jungle geraniums and red ginger lilies, your mind drifts away to an exclusive swanky bliss feeling especially wonderful after a day at the popular Playa Carmen beach just five minutes away.

Rooms

Six individual bungalows and one two-bedroom villa expand across the hillside in an L-shape overlooking the pool, providing a ritzy retreat perfect for families and groups of friends who want privacy without feeling secluded.

The Nido de Amor (lover's nest) bungalow, $134 (July-Nov.), features a canopy-draped queen bed at its room center, ledge chairs by large glass windows, and a toilet/shower area separated only by a curtain from the main room. All bungalows have Wi-Fi, A/C, and safety deposit boxes.

Behind the chic lounge next to the pool, three standard rooms, $78 including breakfast, are a bit more basic: queen bed, A/C, ceiling fan, coffee maker, safety deposit box, Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom.

Restaurant

Breakfast, served 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. in the outdoor lounge, includes coffee and tea, fruit salad, and a la carte choices of scrambled eggs, omelets, breakfast burritos, pancakes and more. Depending on how reservations are booked, breakfast is included in the room price.

Restaurant The Place, on the hotel's upper-deck poolside rancho, is only open during dry season (Dec.-April), and serves grilled meat dishes prepared by Argentinian chefs. When it's closed, guests can use the rancho area as a community kitchen to prepare their own food. You can order cocktails and drinks from the lounge bar all day until 10 p.m., or whenever the pool party fades.

Services and amenities

The reception office is on the corner of the outdoor lounge area, where multilingual receptionists organize tours, make restaurant reservations, order laundry service for $20, call massage therapists, and answer any other questions you may have about Mal Pais or Santa Teresa.
